I do understand that Martin tries to give his characters grit, to make them unlikable and violent, but some of it comes across as weird in his attempt to be вЂњrealisticвЂќ, for example sexualising young girls in brothels who are teenagers, men making comments towards the female characters and the misogyny that he believes is a given in a fantasy series that isnвЂ™t beholden to any historical accuracy (which I hope he makes an effort to fix as the books become more recent).

In a genre that is often hypermasculinised he distributes power fairly between men and women (I do have some qualms about his women but later on that), characters like the feared witch Melisandre, scheming Cersei, the fierce mother Catelyn, the born to rule natural leader Daenerys, the scrappy Arya and the strong and noble Brienne of Tarth, and the demasculinising of his male characters (a dwarf, a eunuch, boy leaders dependent on their mothers) evens the playing field in his attempt at reimagining some primitive history where women were likely undervalued. One of the things I most respect Martin for is his trepidation when it comes to glorifying war and power, he has a real understanding of how corruptable a force power can be, and it is played out in the poisonous way the characters hurt each other. вЂњCrowns do queer things to the heads beneath them.вЂќ Picking up this book to a new chapter was like returning home to a past life, itвЂ™s an incredible comfort read and the drama in the world is unparalleled. Martin isnвЂ™t an incredibly talented descriptor but he is skilled at dialogue and building the readerвЂ™s relationship with the characters, which is incredibly rare and really makes these books the phenomena that they are. I think watching the show really helped me get a frame of reference for reading the books, to visualise the characters and the vibe of the show before tackling the beasts that the books are. When I got into the show I really had to go to an effort to learn the characters, how they were related, their histories and personal beef, and everything else. High fantasy in some ways can be like learning another language, especially in a huge series with various houses, religions, and countless characters. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.вЂќ A shadow on the wall, yet shadows can kill. вЂњPower resides only where men believe it resides. The separate storylines converge in the Battle of the Blackwater The story is connected by various threads Tyrion schemes in KingвЂ™s Landing, Arya is in disguise as Arry on the long hard KingвЂ™s Road, Catelyn counsels her war-minded son Robb, Sansa survives the cruel courts of the capital, Theon reconnects with his roots on the Iron Islands, Davos counsels the cold Stannis, Jon ventures north of the wall in search of answers and Daenerys navigates the House of the Undying in Qarth. We follow multiple characterвЂ™s POV in this story, namely Tyrion, Arya, Catelyn, Sansa, Theon, Davos, Jon, and Daenerys. In the aftermath of King RobertвЂ™s death, 5 men contend for the throne with various claims when some light is shed on the birth of young evil King Joffrey. Martin and focuses on the War of the Five Kings.

I watched an interview with Martin recently where someone asked him how he wrote characters with such conviction outside of his own life experience (an 8-year-old girl, a dwarf, a knight, etc) but he is adamant that he can always find a shared struggle or human experience within whoever he writes, which explains why his characters are so endearing and their losses all the more tragic.ДЄ Clash of Kings is the second book in the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones by George R.

As a long-time Game of Thrones fan, the series was my first look into what morally grey characters can really be, and how morally grey can include all manner of sins. Martin is known for his incredible world-building, shocking plot twists and high fantasy power plays, but the thing that makes this series stand out to me is his character creation.
